Your non-stick is flaking again.
This is how it ends.

The average American goes through 2.4 non-stick pans per decade. Each one starts perfect. Each one ends flaking. Every replacement is the same loop—new pan, false hope, coating gone in 14 months, start over. Cast iron was supposed to break it. It didn't, because you had Lodge.

01
Buy a new pan
Non-stick works perfectly. Eggs slide. Hope is real.
02
14 months later
Coating darkens. Small flakes appear. You ignore it.
03
Read the PFAS article
You realize you've been cooking with it. On everything.
04
Start over
New pan. Different brand. Same coating. Same loop.
New Me vs Old Me

What a surface upgrade
actually looks like.

The Lodge on the left. The ILUME on the right. Same cast iron category. Different manufacturing standard.

"The crust on a ribeye on night one was better than anything I'd ever made. I've since bought the 10-inch for eggs. I'm not buying another pan from anyone else."

For the Lodge Owners

You've already tried cast iron.
You haven't tried this.

Cast iron was always the right category. Lodge is not the right pan. The rough sand-cast surface—the reason your eggs stick, your seasoning flakes, your enthusiasm fades—is not a cast iron problem. It is a Lodge problem.

"I bought Lodge because it was the safe choice. I switched to ILUME because I was tired of the safe choice costing me the experience I wanted. Eggs slide off on day one. I've had it 14 months. The seasoning has never looked better."

Why this matters for your family

PFAS chemicals are found in most non-stick cookware. They don't degrade in the environment—or in the body. They're associated with thyroid disruption, immune suppression, and developmental effects in children.

When your non-stick coating starts scratching or flaking, those compounds go directly into your food. That's the moment most people find this page.

Lume has one coating: natural oil, baked into the iron. That's it. The entire list. You can read every ingredient in under a second.

2 ingredients
Iron. Oil. The complete ingredient list for every ILUME skillet.
The Engineering

Three decisions.
One last skillet.

Most cast iron is built to a price. This one was built to answer three questions no other manufacturer was asking — and the answers are visible in every cook.

ILUME machined cast iron surface
Surface roughness (Ra) — lower is better
ILUME — machined finish 0.8 μm
Standard cast iron (Lodge) 6.3 μm
Non-stick Teflon (new) 0.5 μm — then it flakes
01 — The Iron

Machined smooth.
Not poured rough.

Every cast iron skillet starts the same way — liquid iron poured into a sand mold. The surface that emerges is porous and cratered. Most manufacturers stop there. We don't.

Each ILUME skillet is machined after casting to 0.8 μm roughness — eight times smoother than Lodge. Seasoning oil polymerizes in a continuous layer instead of pooling in craters. This is why ILUME builds non-stick faster and holds it longer.

Why it matters at the pan
ILUME surface — Ra 0.8 μm Smooth
Lodge surface — Ra 6.3 μm 7.9× rougher
Oven safe — full depth sear 700°F
Ra = arithmetic mean roughness. Measured by optical profilometry. Lower value = more uniform seasoning adhesion = better non-stick, faster.
ILUME polymerized seasoning — egg releases clean
Seasoning — lifespan comparison
ILUME pre-applied layers 4 at factory
Builds each cook cycle +1 per use
Teflon coating lifespan 2–5 years, then gone
02 — The Seasoning

Not a coating.
A chemical conversion.

Teflon is applied. Seasoning is grown. The four pre-applied layers on this skillet are polymerized fat — oil molecules permanently bonded to the iron surface under high heat.

Polymerized seasoning builds with every cook. The skillet you use for ten years is measurably more non-stick than the day you bought it. No synthetic cookware can make that claim. The average non-stick pan lasts 2.4 years. This one outlives them all.

The compound effect — year over year
Teflon pan at year 2 Flaking, replace
ILUME at year 2 Better than new
ILUME at year 10 Better than year 2
Polymerization is a chemical reaction, not a mechanical bond. This is why seasoning cannot be "applied" or "reapplied" in the same way a synthetic coating can — it must be grown.
ILUME wall geometry and cooking surface
Usable cooking surface at 10"
ILUME 10" — interior surface 9.1 in²
Lodge 10.25" — interior surface 8.2 in²
Wall taper — release angle 15°
03 — The Geometry

The curve that decides
whether eggs slide.

Wall angle and interior diameter determine whether food releases cleanly. Both are absent from every competitor's spec sheet — because most manufacturers don't optimize them.

The ILUME 10" has a 15° wall taper and 9.1 inches of usable cooking surface. Lodge's 10.25" gives you 8.2. The outer dimensions are marketing. The interior geometry is the product.

Geometry spec — 10" model
Outer diameter 10 inches
Usable cooking surface 9.1 inches
Wall taper angle 15°
Weight — balanced for daily use 4.6 lb
Outer diameter is what brands advertise. Usable cooking surface is what you cook on. These are not the same number.
Maintenance

Cleaning takes
90 seconds.

The single biggest misconception about cast iron is that it's high-maintenance. It isn't. It's just different from what you're used to. Once you know the method, it takes less time than hand-washing a non-stick pan.

1
Rinse with hot water while still warm
Food releases easily when the pan is still hot. No soaking, no scrubbing. Most messes rinse clean in 20 seconds.
2
Stiff brush for anything stuck
No soap required. A stiff brush or the chainmail scrubber removes residue in seconds without damaging the seasoning.
3
30 seconds on low heat to dry
Set it on the burner for 30 seconds. Moisture is the only real enemy of cast iron. This step eliminates it completely.
4
Thin wipe of oil, done
A fingertip's worth of oil wiped across the surface. This maintains the seasoning and adds a layer every time. Every 3–5 cooks is enough — not after every use.

The dishwasher rule: Never. Hot water + dish soap won't ruin it in one wash, but they strip seasoning. 90 seconds by hand is the full maintenance requirement. Non-stick pans are "dishwasher safe" and still end up in the trash. Cast iron done right never does.

Common Questions

Answered honestly.

How is this different from Lodge?
The primary difference is the cooking surface. Lodge uses traditional sand-casting — pour and ship. ILUME adds a secondary milling step that produces a measurably smoother surface. In practice: better seasoning adhesion from the first use, faster food release, and less sticking on eggs and delicate proteins. ILUME is also 9% lighter on the 10-inch model and oven-safe to 700°F vs Lodge's 500°F.
With proper technique, yes. Cast iron's non-stick performance comes from the combination of the seasoned surface and heat management — specifically preheating the pan before adding fat. The care guide that ships with every ILUME walks through this precisely. Most customers report good egg release on their first or second cook. If yours sticks, email us — we'll troubleshoot with you directly.
Traditional bare cast iron (like Lodge) has always been PFAS-free — that's correct. The concern is with enameled or coated cast iron hybrids, which sometimes used PFAS-based coatings. ILUME is traditional bare cast iron seasoned with pure natural oil. No coatings. No enameling. No PFAS, PTFE, PFOA, or GenX compounds. Two ingredients: iron and oil.
Rinse with hot water immediately after use, scrub with a stiff brush if needed, and dry completely on the stovetop over low heat for 30 seconds. Add a very thin layer of oil and wipe off the excess. The whole process takes under two minutes. A detailed care guide ships with every pan.
Full lifetime guarantee, no questions asked. Email us and we'll send a prepaid label. We've never argued with a return request. We'd rather you be honest and return it than be unhappy and keep it.
Yes. The care guide and recipe book that ships with each pan are written for cast iron beginners. People who receive this as a gift and follow the guide report that the pan becomes a reason to cook more. 93% of gift recipients in our post-purchase surveys rated it as one of their favorite kitchen items within 60 days.
